Hunger is a reality for tens of millions of brazilians. Acording to data from Rede Penssan, about 117 million people, or 55% of the country’s population, faced food insecurity in 2020. The situation is even worse in the northern region of the country, where almost 70% of people live with food insecurity.
"I remember when food used to be cheap. Well, we keep on, you know? There are no beans or rice, which we are used to having. There is no flour, you know?", says José Augusto, a carpenter.
Reporter Catarina Barbosa, from Brasil de Fato, visited two families who live on the banks of the Guamá River to learn about the reality of riverside populations.
