In the mouth of São Francisco River, between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe, an oil exploitation project may put at risk the traditional communities and the nature. The drillings are yet to begin, but the project is already concerning those who depend on the river to live.
A total of 11 oil wells can be drilled in the region that has environmental preservation areas and fish species only found in the São Francisco river.
"In my opinion, there is a lack of attention by the governmental agencies to this situation. They need to be a little more transparent and informative, and the information has to arrive to the traditional communities more clearly. It needs to be discussed more and inform all the region’s population", says Emerson Soares, professor at the Federal University of Alagoas.
