This Tuesday (20), Brazil’s President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party) talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Over the phone, Putin congratulated Lula for his victory in the Brazilian elections and wished him success in his third term as president.

Cooperation between the two countries within the BRICS group was also mentioned. BRICS is the English abbreviation for the group of emerging economies formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The Kremlin website released the information.

“Both sides expressed confidence that a strategic partnership between Russia and Brazil will continue to successfully develop in all areas, as well as cooperation on the international stage, including within the scope of BRICS,” says the Kremlin’s statement, adding that the parts agree to keep in touch personally

The Brazilian president-elect made a post about his conversation with his Russian counterpart.

“Today [Tuesday], I spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who congratulated me for winning the elections, wished me a successful term and reiterated the intention to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. Brazil is back seeking to talk to everybody and committed to reaching a peaceful world free of hunger,” Lula tweeted.

On the day after the second round, at the end of October, Vladimir Putin had already congratulated Lula on his victory. At the time, the Russian president stated that the result confirmed Lula's "high political authority".
