Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was released from the hospital on Sunday (15). The news was announced by the medical board accompanying him at the Sírio Libanês Hospital, where he was admitted.

Lula was admitted for surgery last Tuesday (10) due to a three-centimeter hematoma detected between the brain and one of the membranes (meninges) that surround the organ.

The team also said that Lula will remain in São Paulo until next Thursday (19), when he will undergo a hospital CT scan to assess his recovery. He will then travel to Brasília. The medical team recommends that the president maintain a routine without physical exercise, with restrictions on long journeys, but Lula has been authorized for work meetings.

According to cardiologist Roberto Kalil, the surgery was a success, and Lula recovered from the trauma caused by a fall in the bathroom of the Planalto Palace in October. "It's resolved, he's cured," said the doctor.

"I couldn't bend down to take care of my feet"

In a good mood, Lula appeared at the medical team's press conference. "I've come to thank you," announced the president. "I wanted to say that I wasn't cutting my toenail, I was cutting my fingernail," he said.

"I thought I was cured and went back to exercising and traveling; I needed to make the agreement with the European Union ," said Lula. "I was fine on Saturday when I went to Granja Torto [an area in the Federal District that houses the Official Residence of the President of the Republic], but on Monday, I started to feel a headache… As I sunbathed and swam, I thought it was a problem with the sun. When it was late afternoon, I asked to see Dr. Ana in her office and said I was feeling strange."

"I'm here in one piece," Lula announced to journalists. "I'm coming home calm and sure that I'm cured, but I need to take care of myself. I can't do the treadmill or weight training. I need to take it easy for about 60 days, but I'll return to work as normal," the president announced.
