Journalist Pamela Oliveira hosts our weekly English-language show featuring the latest news and fun facts about Brazil - Screen capture/Brasil de Fato

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we’ll take a look at a parliamentarian investigation that is going to probe the Federal government’s lackluster response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has recently seen a rise in fatalities among the youth. Before it even began, president Jair Bolsonaro tried to derail the inquiry that will certainly cost him much political capital and perhaps even his presidency.

In our Story of the Week segment, we delve into Jair Bolsonaro’s wavering support among police forces throughout the country. A proposed bill would cap salaries and admissions exams for fifteen years. The president was already at odds with security forces for not having included them in priority groups for coronavirus vaccines, thus if this bill moves forward, it will likely only deepen the chasm between the police and the former army captain.

In our Culture Talk segment, we introduce you to a group of indigenous women who are using Carimbó, a rhythm native to the Brazilian state of Pará, as a tool of resistance against racism and in the fight for land.

Lastly as is tradition on the show, we wrap things up with a delicious local recipe and some quality Brazilian music. Enjoy!
