The Landless Rural Worker’s Movement (MST, in Portuguese) in the state of Paraíba is making efforts to support homeless families to rebuild their hope amid the devastation that occurred on May 8, when the Canudos Landless Encampment was violently attacked, leaving four families homeless.
Armed hooded men stormed the encampment, setting shacks on fire and leaving residents in despair. Gerlane Alves, one of the victims, described the scene as “horrible” and lamented the loss of everything they had.
According to the MST, "During the violent action, Gerlane was roasting fish, and her kids were watching TV with their father. She said the men were yelling at them, affirming they were police officers and were there to do good. Gerlane’s husband had his hands tied with plastic clamps. After that, they were pushed out of the shack followed by their kids and saw the men spilling a flammable product and burning their house. The attackers didn't even allow the couple to remove the children's clothes and belongings."
In response to this brutality, the MST is launching a campaign to collect donations to help the families affected. Non-perishable food, personal hygiene items, cleaning products, mattresses, clothes, household utensils and appliances are urgently needed.
Donation drop points have been set up at the Elizabeth and João Pedro Teixeira Training Center, in Lagoa Seca, and at Armazém do Campo, in the Castelo Branco neighborhood, in João Pessoa, Paraíba’s capital city.
