Brazil is once again represented at the Academy Awards, this time with The Secret Agent (2025), which received nominations in four categories. The Brazilian feature is competing for Oscars for Best Picture, Best Casting, and Best International Feature Film. Wagner Moura was also nominated and is in the race for Best Actor.
The awards ceremony will be held on the night of March 15 and will be streamed on the Oscars’ official YouTube channel.
Following a widely praised performance, Wagner Moura won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama on January 11. At the 98th Academy Awards, he will compete against Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, and Ethan Hawke.
In addition to The Secret Agent, Brazilian cinematographer Adolpho Veloso received a nomination for Best Cinematography for his work on the drama Train Dreams.
In 2025, Brazilian audiences experienced a similar moment of excitement with the triple nomination of I’m Still Here. Directed by Walter Salles, the film won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film and also competed in the Best Picture category, in addition to a Best Actress nomination for Fernanda Torres.
To date, five Brazilian films have competed for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film: Keeper of the Promises (1963), O Quatrilho (1996), Four Days in September (1998), Central Station (1999), and I’m Still Here (2024).
